Free Market as religion

Not a recent article, but a good one.  The author, Harvey Cox, is not trying to prove that the Free Market is sacrilegious and mock it, even though he occasionally veers into mildly snarky language.  On the contrary, he asserts that the market is its own religion, complete with creation myth, sin and redemption, etc.

This article feels right to me because the most fervent free-marketers I know are lapsed Baptists who have, to some extent, transferred their religious fervor.  Cox also, without meaning to, explains why the portrayal of hyper-capitalist-industrialist-robber barons as greedy villains in print and film rings hollow, even if it is comforting to chalk up their actions to "bad people do bad things."  Their credo is not "I love the deregulation because it will make me rich even if everyone else suffers."  They truly believe "deregulation and the market will solve everything."
